EN 10204:2004 โ€” Inspection Documents for Metallic Products

Procurement guide to selecting, ordering and checking inspection documents for metallic-product deliveries.

Edition control: EN 10204:2004 is current in the national records checked on 31 August 2026. National-adoption identifiers and publication dates differ; for example, DIN EN 10204:2005-01 is the German adoption. The current authorised publication and the purchase order govern each delivery.

Scope in Procurement

EN 10204 provides a framework for types of inspection documents supplied with metallic products. For steel-product certificate data fields, the companion EN 10168:2004 procurement guide explains the information-control layer. It is used together with the applicable product specification, the named EN 10021 general delivery conditions or ISO 404 delivery requirements, drawing, inspection plan and contractual acceptance requirements.

The document designation does not establish the material grade, manufacturing route, test scope or project conformity by itself. Those controls must be stated separately in the inquiry and order.

Document Routes โ€” Procurement Summary

Document typeProcurement meaningControl before order
2.1Declaration of compliance with the order; specific test results are not the defining feature.Confirm whether this level is acceptable for the product and project.
2.2Compliance statement supported by results from non-specific inspection.Do not treat non-specific results as heat- or item-specific evidence.
3.1Specific inspection results with the manufacturer-side independent validation route defined by the standard.State the required tests, heat or lot traceability, product specification and acceptance criteria.
3.2Specific inspection results with the additional validation route required for this document type.Name the required purchaser-designated or third-party involvement in the order and confirm feasibility before quotation.

This table is an original purchasing summary, not the wording of the protected standard. Use the authorised EN publication for the formal definitions and validation requirements.

EN 10204 and ISO 10474

EN 10204 is a European inspection-document framework for metallic products. ISO 10474:2013 addresses inspection documents for deliveries of steel products. Their terminology and document routes must not be assumed to be automatically identical. State the required standard and document designation explicitly.
