EN 10168:2004 โ€” Inspection-Document Information for Steel Products

Procurement reference for defining and checking the information carried in steel-product inspection documents.

Edition control: EN 10168:2004 is current in the official national record checked on 31 August 2026; DIN EN 10168:2004-09 is the German adoption. Confirm the authorised edition and order documents for each supply.

Scope in Procurement

EN 10168 provides a standardized structure for information that may appear in inspection documents for steel products described under EN 10204. It supports consistent communication; it does not choose the EN 10204 document type or define the steel product itself.

Use it together with the product specification, purchase order, inspection plan and the required EN 10204 route. A populated certificate is useful only when its identifiers and results trace back to the supplied material.

Information Groups to Control

  • Order, purchaser, manufacturer and document identity
  • Product designation, grade, governing specification and delivery condition
  • Product form, dimensions, quantity and marking identifiers
  • Heat, cast, lot, batch or item traceability
  • Chemical, mechanical, corrosion, NDT, dimensional or other required results
  • Test methods, units, sampling and acceptance references
  • Inspection-party validation, signatures and issue or revision data
  • Links between certificate, packing list, labels and supplied items

This is an original procurement checklist, not the protected EN 10168 code list. The authorised standard governs the formal field designations and code structure.

RFQ and Purchase-Order Controls

  • State EN 10204 edition and required document type
  • State whether EN 10168 information structure is required
  • Define grade, product standard, form, condition and dimensions
  • Define required tests, sampling, frequency and acceptance criteria
  • Define heat, lot or item-level traceability
  • Name any purchaser, class, notified-body or third-party involvement
  • Define electronic or paper format, language and delivery timing
  • Require missing or transferred results to be explained before acceptance

Certificate Review

Check that material identity, traceability and results are internally consistent and match the markings and quantity delivered. A certificate does not create grade equivalence, prove product suitability or replace independent verification where the project requires it.

Relationship to EN 10204

EN 10204:2004 defines inspection-document routes for metallic products. EN 10168 addresses the information structure for steel-product inspection documents. Specify both only where their respective scopes and the project requirements call for them.
