TUNGSTEN–NICKEL–IRON HIGH-DENSITY MATERIALS

WNiFe Tungsten Heavy Alloy

ASTM-class and property-controlled sourcing for WNiFe mill products and finished components.

MNK-G.S.A sources tungsten–nickel–iron heavy alloy by ASTM class where applicable, exact manufacturer composition, density, mechanical properties, magnetic requirement, product form, dimensions, drawing, inspection documents and destination.

Binder System and ASTM Class Are Separate Requirements

WNiFe combines a high tungsten content with a nickel–iron binder. ASTM B777 defines four density and property classes but does not remove the need to confirm actual chemistry, magnetic response, manufacturing route and part-specific requirements.

Material Definition and Supply Scope

Nominal 90% W

Manufacturer families commonly map nominal 90 wt.% tungsten WNiFe materials to ASTM B777 Class 1, subject to certificate and property confirmation.

Nominal 92.5% W

Published WNiFe families include nominal 92.5 wt.% tungsten variants associated with ASTM B777 Class 2.

Nominal 95% W

Manufacturer Class 3 families commonly include nominal 95 wt.% tungsten grades with nickel and iron binder.

Nominal 97% W

Published Class 4 WNiFe families include nominal 97 wt.% tungsten grades. Actual ductility and part testing require special attention.

Rod, Plate and Blocks

Semi-finished products are sourced by class, complete dimensions, condition, machining allowance, surface and test requirements.

Parts to Drawing

Counterweights, shields, collimators, dampers and custom components require part geometry, mass, tolerances, magnetic behaviour and inspection plan.

Typical Global Sourcing Range

The ranges below represent typical global sourcing and manufacturing capability across specialist sources. They are not MNK stock and do not describe one universal factory envelope.

Product FormTypical Global Sourcing RangeNotes
RodØ2–320 mmTypical length to approximately 600 mm.
Plate / Block2–200 mm thicknessWidth to approximately 300 mm and length to approximately 600 mm.
Custom Shapes / PartsAccording to drawingClass, binder, density, properties and machining route are confirmed individually.

The complete class–form–dimension combination must be verified for the actual source and batch.

Actual availability depends on grade, specification, quantity, tolerances, certification requirements and manufacturing source. Diameter, thickness, width and length must be confirmed as one complete combination.

Standards and Documentation

ASTM B777-15(2026)

Current specification for four classes of machinable high-density tungsten-base material made by powder consolidation. Class, chemistry, density and mechanical requirements are certificate-controlled.

ASTM Class Is Not Chemistry

A Class 1–4 designation does not by itself prove a particular nickel–iron ratio. The actual W, Ni and Fe values are checked against the approved manufacturer grade.

Magnetic Behaviour

WNiFe is generally magnetic or slightly magnetic. If permeability is critical, a numerical requirement and test method must be stated.

AMS 7725

Some manufacturer grades publish an AMS 7725 class and type cross-reference. The required edition, class, type and procurement scope are verified before quotation.

EN 10204:2004

Inspection-document type, including 3.1 or 3.2 where available, is specified with chemistry, density, mechanical, dimensional and traceability results.

Part-Specific Testing

ASTM coupon properties may differ from large or complex parts. Critical components can require testing from the part or an agreed additional inspection plan.

Reference Physical and Mechanical Properties

Reference Basis

Published integrated-manufacturer data for WNiFe families aligned with ASTM B777 Classes 1–4 provide useful reference values. Exact chemistry and properties remain grade-, route- and condition-specific.

Composition and Density

Published nominal tungsten content spans about 90–97 wt.% and reference density about 17.0–18.5 g/cm³ across the listed WNiFe grade families.

Tensile Properties

The cited table lists minimum ultimate tensile strength around 689–758 MPa and minimum yield strength around 648 MPa for the standard grade families, with elongation requirements changing by class.

Hardness

Published maximum hardness rises from approximately 32 HRC for nominal 90% W families to about 35 HRC for nominal 97% W material.

Magnetic Behaviour

Conventional WNiFe grades are not treated as non-magnetic. If magnetic response matters, binder chemistry, a numerical permeability limit and the agreed test method must be specified.

Part versus Coupon

Published datasheet and ASTM values commonly relate to standardized test specimens. Large, thick or complex finished parts may require additional sampling or part-specific testing.

Application Context

Counterweights and Inertia

Dense components designed around target mass, centre of gravity, strength, geometry, balance and magnetic constraints.

Radiation Management

Shields and collimators defined by radiation type, attenuation geometry, machining, joining and regulatory requirements.

Damping and Precision Components

High-density parts for vibration, boring, balancing and other engineered systems after load and tolerance review.

Capability Note

Published dimensional ranges describe demonstrated manufacturing capability across specialist sources, not guaranteed stock and not one universal mill envelope. Diameter, thickness, width, length, condition, tolerance and quantity must be confirmed as one complete combination for each inquiry.

Relevant ASTM Tungsten References

Use the relevant ASTM reference together with the customer specification, drawing, required product form and inspection route. The standard number alone does not establish grade equivalence, stock availability, conformity or fitness for service.
