Scope in Procurement
ASTM A453/A453M covers defined grades and strength classes of bolting material and components for high-temperature applications such as pressure vessels and valve flanges. The material requires special processing and is not intended as a general-purpose bolting route.
Standards Relationship
The specification invokes ASTM A962/A962M common requirements. The ordered A453 grade and class, component form and all purchaser options still govern the released product.
RFQ and Manufacturing Controls
- Exact component: bolt, screw, nut, stud, stud bolt, washer or ordered bar
- ASTM A453 grade, strength class, dimensions and thread system
- Service temperature, pressure-vessel or valve-flange duty and governing design code
- Required heat-treatment route and manufacturing condition
- Tensile, hardness, stress-rupture and supplementary test requirements stated by the order
- Compatible mating component, coating, marking and packaging
- Heat, lot and finished-component traceability with inspection documents
A raw-material or semi-finished-product certificate alone does not establish compliance of the finished bolting component. Traceability must continue through manufacture, testing, marking and the released lot.
Scope Boundary
Expansion compatibility in the standard title does not create automatic material interchangeability. The selected grade and class must be verified against the joint design, mating material, service temperature, load case and project specification.
