Grade Identity and Verification
- 904L is a high-nickel, molybdenum- and copper-alloyed austenitic stainless grade identified as UNS N08904 and EN 1.4539 / X1NiCrMoCu25-20-5.
- A material name alone does not prove compliance. Plate, bar, tube, pipe and forgings are controlled by different product standards and must be ordered separately.
- Current ASTM records moved N08904 flat products from legacy B625 to A240/A480, bar from legacy B649 to A479/A484, and tube or pipe from legacy B677/B673 to A269/A312.
- Manufacturer literature identifies chemical processing, sulphuric- and phosphoric-acid equipment, flue-gas cleaning, pulp and paper, desalination, seawater handling and heat exchangers as application contexts.
- Suitability depends on concentration, temperature, contaminants, flow, fabrication, weld condition and the governing design code; 904L is not a universal solution for every chloride or acid service.

Application Context
904L may be considered where standard austenitic grades do not provide the required corrosion margin. Final selection requires the actual process medium, concentration, temperature range, chlorides and oxidizing species, crevice geometry, stress, fabrication route and cleaning or passivation requirements. For pressure equipment, material acceptance must also match the governing design code and project documentation.
