MNK-G.S.A matches the proposed blank to the finished-tool geometry, workpiece, machining operation, carbide grade, finish, quantity and inspection requirements. A rod diameter or familiar grade name alone is not sufficient for selection.

The quotation must identify the supplied condition. “Carbide rod” does not define whether grinding, dimensional tolerance, chamfering, coolant channels or cut length are included.

Current Catalogue Examples

Published specialist programmes demonstrate several commercially established routes:

  • Solid rotary-tool rods are available in metric and imperial sizes, with catalogue routes for standard length, cut-to-length and pressed-to-length supply.
  • One current programme identifies 12 in. (approximately 305 mm) as a standard rod length; another publishes long solid blanks at 320 mm.
  • A selected as-sintered straight-coolant-hole schedule includes diameters from approximately 4.3 to 25.3 mm and lengths of approximately 325–335 mm.
  • Insert programmes include standard styles as well as custom 2D and 3D near-net geometries for threading, parting, grooving, drilling, reaming and milling tools.
  • Semi-finished preforms may incorporate steps, centers, slots, threads, coolant channels and other features before final grinding.

Catalogue examples are not an unrestricted combined range. Diameter, length, channel geometry, grade, tolerance and finish must be confirmed as one manufacturable combination for each enquiry.

The Finished Tool Defines the Blank

  • Tool type, cutting geometry and finished dimensions
  • Workpiece material, hardness and surface condition
  • Drilling, milling, reaming, tapping, grooving or other operation
  • Cutting speed, feed, interrupted cut and vibration exposure
  • Coolant strategy and required internal-channel configuration
  • WC grain-size family, binder system and permitted additives
  • Required balance of hardness, strength and toughness
  • Grinding, EDM, coating or brazing route after blank supply
  • Surface finish, straightness, dimensional tolerance and allowance
  • Prototype validation, batch consistency and documentation

A cobalt percentage or an application group cannot replace complete grade data. ВК, WCo, YG, proprietary carbide and cermet designations require controlled comparison before any alternative is proposed.

Grade Verification and Inspection

The purchase specification should identify the required grade properties and the tests that control acceptance. Depending on the tool and supply route, inspection may include chemistry, density, hardness, transverse-rupture strength, coercivity, porosity, microstructure, grain size, dimensions, straightness, channel geometry and surface finish.

Applicable ISO and ASTM hardmetal test methods define measurement routes, not automatic grade equivalence or universal acceptance limits. The drawing, product specification and agreed inspection plan remain controlling.
