Cemented Carbide Brazed Tips and Assemblies

Technical sourcing of standard and drawing-based cemented-carbide tips, steel-supported parts and finished brazed tools.

MNK-G.S.A coordinates the hardmetal tip, support or shank, joint materials, manufacturing route, inspection and delivery as one controlled sourcing package. The carbide grade, tip geometry and brazed joint must be specified together rather than selected as independent catalogue items.

What the Supply Package Can Include

Carbide Tips

Pressed or machined blanks, standard brazing-tip geometries and drawing-based tips supplied as sintered, ground or otherwise finished items according to the agreed drawing.

Brazed Assemblies

Carbide joined to a steel shank, pocket, holder or support, with the base material, filler metal, joint design, thermal route and final machining defined in the manufacturing package.

Finished Tools

External or internal turning tools, special form tools and selected milling-tool configurations supplied to the applicable standard or an approved customer drawing.

A standardised tip shape is not a complete order specification. Grade, condition, tolerances, support geometry, braze filler, process controls and inspection evidence remain separate requirements.

Specify the Hardmetal and the Joint Together

Hardmetal Definition

  • Governing grade or customer specification
  • Declared WC, binder and permitted additions
  • Grain-size and microstructure requirements
  • Density, hardness, porosity and other acceptance limits
  • Sintered, ground or finished supply condition

Assembly Definition

  • Support or shank material and heat treatment
  • Pocket, overlap, clearance and joint geometry
  • Filler metal, flux or controlled atmosphere
  • Heating method and permitted thermal cycle
  • Final grinding, marking and inspection route

Brazing cemented carbide to steel involves different thermal expansion and heat-flow behaviour in the two materials. Joint geometry and the controlled manufacturing route therefore form part of the technical requirement. MNK-G.S.A does not infer a brazing procedure from the tip grade alone.

Drawing and Dimensional Control

  • Identify whether dimensions apply to the loose tip, the support before joining or the finished assembly.
  • Define datums, critical faces, angles, radii, edge preparation and grinding stock.
  • State whether the carbide is required as-pressed, as-sintered, ground or finish-machined.
  • Show the joint line, pocket, overlap and any required braze-gap controls.
  • Separate general tolerances from characteristics requiring individual inspection records.
  • Specify final run-out, alignment, tool orientation and marking where relevant.

For reverse engineering, a physical sample is useful only when the customer also defines which features and material characteristics must be reproduced or improved.

Inspection and Traceability

The inspection plan should distinguish the hardmetal batch, the steel or support batch, the brazing consumable and the completed joint. Required evidence may include incoming material certificates, dimensional reports, visual inspection, agreed joint-quality checks, hardness or microstructure results for the carbide, and final identification of the assembled tool.
