Industrial Metals RFQ Checklist — Grade, Form, Dimensions and Documents
A complete industrial metals RFQ helps MNK-G.S.A identify the right manufacturing route, compare technically suitable sources and avoid assumptions about grade, dimensions, condition or certification.
Why the RFQ Controls the Sourcing Result
A material name alone is rarely enough for technical sourcing. The same family may include different compositions, product forms, manufacturing routes, conditions and inspection requirements. MNK reviews the complete request before selecting suitable manufacturers and preparing a quotation.
The purpose of a good RFQ is not to make the customer write a technical report. It is to separate confirmed requirements from points that still need clarification.
1. Identify the Material and Governing Requirement
- Material family and exact grade or designation
- Required composition when the designation is ambiguous
- Governing ASTM, EN, ISO, DIN, ТУ, GOST or project specification, including edition when known
- Whether the named standard is mandatory or supplied only as a technical reference
- Whether alternatives may be proposed for documented technical review
A familiar commercial designation is not automatic proof of equivalence. The controlling specification, composition, condition and required test results must be checked together.

2. State the Product Form and Complete Dimensions
State whether the requirement is for wire, rod, bar, tube, pipe, sheet, plate, strip, foil, forging, fitting, fastener, welding consumable, blank or finished part. Give all dimensions as one complete combination and include the units.

Do not combine the minimum and maximum values from a published sourcing range into an assumed product. Width, length, wall, diameter and thickness often depend on one another and must be confirmed as a complete size.

3. Define Condition, Tolerances and Surface
Material Condition
- Heat-treatment or delivery condition
- Worked, stress-relieved or recrystallized state where applicable
- Hardness or mechanical-property requirement when controlled
Dimensional Control
- Dimensional tolerances and straightness or flatness
- Surface finish, grinding, polishing or machining allowance
- Critical dimensions that require inspection records
4. Give Quantity and Commercial Units Clearly
Provide the required number of pieces, total length, coil weight, net weight or another meaningful purchasing unit. If the requirement may repeat, distinguish the first order from estimated annual demand. This helps separate sample, prototype, small-series and production sourcing routes without presenting any quantity as guaranteed availability.
5. Specify Documents, Inspection and Traceability
- Required inspection-document designation under the contract or project specification
- Chemical analysis, mechanical tests or other specified reports
- Heat, lot or batch traceability and required marking
- Third-party inspection, witness or approval points when required
- Language, number of copies and document-delivery format
Do not request “full certification” without defining what the project needs. A certificate type, test report or inspection route should be tied to the governing order requirements. MNK can review the requested documentation before quotation.
6. Attach Drawings and Technical References
For parts manufactured to drawing, attach the drawing with its revision status and identify the critical characteristics. A previous certificate, datasheet, material reference or photograph may help explain the requirement, but it does not replace the governing specification or an approved drawing.
The MNK inquiry form accepts one controlled technical attachment. If several files are required, combine them into an appropriate non-executable archive or note that additional documents will follow through the agreed communication channel.
7. Add Application and Delivery Context
Service conditions do not replace a material specification, but they can reveal conflicts that need engineering review. Where relevant, state temperature, medium, pressure, loading, fabrication route, electrical or thermal duty and whether the part is safety- or project-critical.
Also state the delivery country and city, required delivery date, packaging constraints and any project-specific import, marking or documentation requirement known at the inquiry stage.
