CATHODIC-PROTECTION COMPONENTS · DESIGN-CONTROLLED SOURCING

Sacrificial Anodes for Marine Systems

Technical sourcing of aluminium-, zinc- or magnesium-based galvanic anodes against the governing cathodic-protection design, alloy specification, drawings and inspection requirements.

MNK-G.S.A coordinates anode manufacturing, documentation, inserts, dimensions, testing, packing and delivery for marine and related infrastructure projects after the required design basis is established.

Technical Identity

  • A sacrificial or galvanic anode is one component of an engineered cathodic-protection system. Vessel type alone does not determine the correct alloy, mass, quantity or installation layout.
  • ISO 9351:2025 / EN ISO 9351:2025 is the current framework for cast aluminium-, magnesium- and zinc-based galvanic anodes used in seawater, saline sediment and brackish water.
  • ISO 20313:2018 covers cathodic protection of ships, including external hull and ballast-tank systems, and remains current after confirmation in 2023.
  • EN 16222:2012 is the European standard for cathodic protection of ship hulls. It must not be misidentified as ISO 16222.
  • ASTM B418-16a(2021) applies to cast and wrought galvanic zinc anodes. It does not establish requirements for aluminium or magnesium anodes.
  • DNV-RP-B401 provides a project-design framework for aluminium- or zinc-based anodes, but the governing owner, class and project requirements control the actual system.

Application Context

Potential systems include ship hulls and ballast tanks, rudders, shafts, sea chests, water intakes, harbour structures and pipelines where the governing design permits galvanic anodes. Required current output and life depend on protected area, coating condition, water chemistry, salinity, temperature, flow, resistivity, design life and interaction with connected metals.

RFQ and Quality Controls

  • Approved cathodic-protection calculation, drawing and governing standard
  • Protected structure, exposed area, coating system and design life
  • Water or sediment conditions, salinity, temperature, resistivity and flow
  • Specified anode alloy, electrochemical capacity, closed-circuit potential and acceptance tests
  • Anode mass, dimensions, insert or cable material, attachment and installation geometry
  • Class, OEM or owner approval, inspection plan, lot traceability, quantity and destination
