Scope in Procurement
ISO 14284:2022 specifies sampling and sample-preparation methods for determining the chemical composition of pig iron, cast iron and steel, covering both liquid and solid metal.
The order, product standard, laboratory method and inspection plan must identify the required sampling route, elements and acceptance criteria.

- Material form and state: liquid or solid metal
- Heat, cast, lot, product and sample identity
- Sampling location and representativeness
- Surface preparation and contamination control
- Sample form required by the analytical method
- Elements, reporting limits and units
- Reference materials, laboratory and method requirements
- Traceability between results, certificate and delivered product
All sample identifiers, preparation steps and test results should remain traceable to the delivered heat, lot or item and to the governing order documents.
Scope Boundary
ISO 14284 addresses samples for chemical-composition determination, not mechanical-test-piece preparation or universal acceptance limits.
