MATERIAL COMPARISON
Select the filler for the joint, not just the base-alloy name
ER5183 and ER5356 are distinct aluminium filler classifications. An offer for welding 5083 should identify the required consumable and the qualified welding procedure specification (WPS). This purchasing comparison does not supply welding parameters or qualify a joint.
Differences to verify
| Criterion | ER5183 | ER5356 |
|---|---|---|
| AWS A5.10 classification | ER5183 | ER5356 |
| 5083 strength context: Lincoln Electric MC16-95 | Recommended where matching 5083 strength is needed | Does not fully match 5083 strength in the cited guidance |
| Hulamin 5083 marine plate brochure | Preferred filler | Also listed as an option |
Lincoln Electric MC16-95 (02/2017), page 2, and the Hulamin Marine 5083 brochure, PDF page 2 (publication date not stated), have different scopes. Their guidance is not a blanket approval of either filler for every 5083 joint. The welding authority must resolve the actual requirement.

What should drive the choice?
Joint and procedure
Identify both base materials and the applicable WPS. For a dissimilar joint, do not assume that advice for joining 5083 to itself applies unchanged.
Required performance
If a proposed filler differs from the drawing or WPS, request technical acceptance before purchase. The classification alone is not proof of the completed joint’s strength or service suitability.
Order identification
Specify the exact filler classification, wire or rod form, diameter and quantity. Include the relevant drawing or procedure reference in the existing inquiry notes; do not replace it with a generic “aluminium wire” description.
Limits of substitution
ER5356 is not an automatic substitute for ER5183, and ER5183 is not automatically preferable for every joint involving 5083. Selection and any change belong to the responsible welding engineer under the project’s qualified procedure and acceptance requirements. No welding settings or universal welded-joint strength are stated here.
