5083-H116 vs 5083-H321: Keep the Temper in the Specification

MATERIAL COMPARISON

The same alloy number does not erase the temper requirement

H116 and H321 identify different supply tempers of 5083. For procurement, compare the complete product description and acceptance basis. Matching headline strength figures alone do not establish that one temper may replace the other.

Differences to verify

Manufacturer example, not universal standard limits: Hulamin Marine 5083 brochure, PDF page 2 (publication date not stated). The listed product thickness range is 3–32 mm.

These are the brochure’s published minimum figures for its listed marine plate, not typical values, certified batch results or limits for every thickness and supplier. The brochure does not give a complete tensile-test basis here; obtain the applicable product specification and test evidence before engineering use.

What should drive the choice?

Required temper

Retain H116 or H321 exactly as required by the drawing or purchase specification. If an alternative is offered, list the deviation explicitly for technical review.

Thickness and evidence

Check the offered thickness and the scope of the supporting evidence together. Do not apply this brochure example to a different product range or treat it as an inspection certificate.

Marine acceptance

ASTM B209/B209M-21a, public scope Note 3, directs the relevant high-magnesium H116/H321 marine products to B928/B928M and its additional corrosion requirements. Agree the applicable standard edition and acceptance basis for the project.

Limits of substitution

Neither a shared alloy number nor equal brochure strength figures establishes unconditional equivalence. Do not replace H116 with H321, omit the temper or change plate thickness without the responsible technical approval. Supplier listings do not prove MNK stock availability or certification of an offered batch.
