Classification Comes Before Colour or Trade Name
Electrode type influences arc starting, stability, current capacity and service behaviour, but suitability also depends on current type, polarity, base material, welding procedure and equipment. The governing AWS or ISO classification and the manufacturer certificate are checked for every inquiry.
Material Definition and Supply Scope
Pure Tungsten
Pure-tungsten electrodes are sourced by the applicable classification, diameter, length and identification. Their use is selected against the approved welding procedure rather than colour alone.
Ceriated Tungsten
Commercial 2% ceriated products are commonly designated EWCe-2 under AWS product catalogues. Exact oxide content and classification are certificate-controlled.
Lanthanated Tungsten
Manufacturer catalogues include lanthanated families such as EWLa-2 and commercial WL15 or WL20 designations. These names are verified against the governing standard before quotation.
Rare-Earth / Mixed-Oxide
Rare-earth or mixed-oxide electrodes may use manufacturer-specific descriptions or an applicable AWS classification such as EWG. Chemistry and colour coding require documentary confirmation.
Other Classified Types
Zirconiated, thoriated and other classified electrode families may be sourced when explicitly requested and legally acceptable for the destination and workplace controls.
Prepared Electrodes
Cut lengths, pre-ground tips and application-specific preparation are reviewed by diameter, point geometry, finish, cleanliness, packaging and welding procedure.

ISO 6848:2015
Current international standard for classification of nonconsumable tungsten electrodes for inert-gas arc welding and plasma processes; ISO confirmed the edition in 2026.
