TZM MOLYBDENUM ALLOY MILL PRODUCTS & COMPONENTS

TZM Molybdenum Alloy — Technical Sourcing

Specification-led sourcing for TZM sheet, plate, foil, rod, bar, forgings and parts to drawing.

MNK-G.S.A sources TZM by the governing grade, production route, dimensions, condition, documentation and application requirements. ASTM grades and manufacturer trade descriptions are verified before quotation.

TZM Is a Defined Molybdenum Alloy, Not a Generic Label

ASTM B386/B386M and B387/B387M define TZM as molybdenum alloyed with nominal 0.5% titanium and 0.1% zirconium in specified vacuum arc-cast and powder-metallurgy grades. Exact chemistry, condition and properties remain certificate-controlled for every supply.

Material Definition and Supply Scope

ASTM Grade 363

Vacuum arc-cast molybdenum–0.5% titanium–0.1% zirconium TZM within the product-form scope of ASTM B386/B386M or B387/B387M.

ASTM Grade 364

Powder-metallurgy molybdenum–0.5% titanium–0.1% zirconium TZM within the applicable flat- or long-product specification.

Sheet, Foil and Plate

Rolled flat products sourced by thickness, width, length, production route, condition, surface finish and mechanical-property requirements.

Rod, Bar and Forgings

Forged, extruded, swaged, rolled or ground products sourced by complete size combination, surface condition, tolerances and required properties.

Custom Components

Isothermal-forging tooling, furnace components, dies, nozzles and engineered parts reviewed against drawing and operating requirements.

Material Verification

A commercial description of “TZM” does not by itself prove ASTM Grade 363 or 364. Production route, chemistry and required properties are confirmed from the governing specification and certificate.

Typical Global Sourcing Range

The ranges below represent typical global sourcing and manufacturing capability across specialist sources. They are not MNK stock and do not describe one universal factory envelope.

Product FormTypical Global Sourcing RangeNotes
WireApproximately Ø0.5–4 mmCondition, finish and continuous length depend on source and specification.
Rod / BarApproximately Ø0.75–125 mmMaximum length depends on diameter, route and condition.
Sheet / PlateTypical 0.1–50 mm thicknessSpecialist heavy plate to approximately 80 mm may be available on request.
Width / LengthWidth approximately 600–660 mm; length approximately 2000 mmThe achievable format depends on thickness and manufacturer.
Custom PartsAccording to drawingGrade, production route and feasibility are verified before quotation.

Plate to approximately 80 mm is a specialist capability, not a universal TZM guarantee.

Actual availability depends on grade, specification, quantity, tolerances, certification requirements and manufacturing source. Diameter, thickness, width and length must be confirmed as one complete combination.

Standards and Documentation

ASTM B386/B386M-25

Covers TZM flat products as Grade 363 for vacuum arc-cast material and Grade 364 for powder-metallurgy material, together with defined chemistry and mechanical requirements.

ASTM B387/B387M-23

Covers TZM bar, rod and wire as Grades 363 and 364 within the standard’s long-product scope.

Manufacturer Specifications

Manufacturer datasheets may define additional PM, arc-cast, premium or application grades. Their equivalence to ASTM is not assumed without documented confirmation.

EN 10204:2004

Inspection documents may be requested under the European framework, including a specified 3.1 or 3.2 document type when the supply chain can support it.

EN / DIN Requirements

A European or national product standard is applied only when its exact number, edition and scope are stated. EN 10204 defines documents, not TZM chemistry or dimensional tolerances.

Order Definition

The purchase specification should state ASTM grade or approved manufacturer grade, production route, product form, condition, dimensions and required tests.

Reference Physical and Mechanical Properties

Reference Basis

The values below are representative specialist-manufacturer data for a TZM product family. They are not universal certificate limits and must not replace grade-, route- and condition-specific acceptance criteria.

Density and Melting Range

Published reference values: density approximately 10.22 g/cm³ and melting range approximately 2,500–2,600 °C.

Thermal Expansion

Published coefficient of thermal expansion: approximately 5.3 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹ over 20–100 °C for the referenced TZM material.

Thermal Conductivity and Heat Capacity

Published room-temperature references: approximately 126 W/(m·K) thermal conductivity and 270 J/(kg·K) specific heat at about 23 °C.

Elastic Modulus

Published reference value: approximately 320 GPa. Product form, processing route and temperature must be considered in design.

Tensile Properties

A specialist TZM reference reports tensile strength of approximately 560–1,150 MPa with elongation below 20%. The broad range reflects condition dependence; the required minimum must be written into the purchase specification.

Application Context

Forming and Tooling

TZM is considered for high-load and elevated-temperature tooling where the selected grade, geometry and operating conditions support its use.

Furnace and Thermal Systems

Hot-zone hardware, supports, heat shields and furnace components require review of temperature, atmosphere, loading and fabrication route.

Precision Components

Dies, nozzles, electrodes and custom parts are sourced after technical review of drawing, tolerance, surface and inspection requirements.

Capability Note

Published dimensional ranges describe demonstrated manufacturing capability across specialist sources, not guaranteed stock and not one universal mill envelope. Diameter, thickness, width, length, condition, tolerance and quantity must be confirmed as one complete combination for each inquiry.
