MATERIAL COMPARISON
Start with the service conditions, not a blanket upgrade.
A change from 316L to 2205 needs a project-specific reason. Separate corrosion exposure, mechanical requirements and the fabrication route before comparing offers.
Differences to verify
| Criterion | 316L / 1.4404 | Duplex 2205 / 1.4462 |
|---|---|---|
| EN | 1.4404 | 1.4462 |
| UNS | S31603 | S32205 |
| PRE | 24 | 35 |
Product basis: Supra 316L/4404 and Forta DX 2205. These are not guaranteed values for every 316L or 2205 shipment. No strength or service-temperature limit is assigned here.

What should drive the choice?
Exposure
State the process medium and operating temperature. Include whether service is continuous or intermittent; a material name alone does not establish corrosion suitability.
Strength
Compare required and offered strength for the same product form, delivered condition and design temperature. Do not turn a material substitution into an unapproved reduction in section thickness.
Fabrication
Ask the fabricator to confirm the proposed material within the forming and welding plan. Purchasing a different grade does not qualify the production procedure.
Limits of substitution
A higher PRE does not approve use in a particular environment or make 2205 a universal replacement for 316L. Retain the specified grade until a design change is accepted.
