ASTM B294-22 — Cemented Carbide Hardness Testing

Procurement reference for Rockwell HRA hardness testing and traceable comparison of cemented-carbide materials.

Edition control: Active; ASTM B294-22. This original MNK-G.S.A summary does not reproduce or replace the protected ASTM publication. Confirm the current authorised edition and governing order documents before use.

Scope in Procurement

ASTM B294-22 covers Rockwell HRA hardness testing of cemented carbides within the method’s defined range and equipment route.

Hardness can support comparison of wear-resistance and toughness tendencies within a composition family and can indicate metallurgical quality for a specific grade.

Hardness is not sufficient by itself to identify a grade or establish application suitability. Indenter, test blocks, surface condition, specimen thickness and measurement practice must be controlled.

Where This Standard Fits

  • Hardmetal certificate and batch review
  • Comparing results produced by the same controlled method
  • Checking metallurgical consistency within a grade
  • Coordinating hardness with density, TRS and microstructure evidence

Ordering and Document Controls

  • Exact ASTM edition and ordered grade
  • Specimen thickness, geometry and surface preparation
  • Rockwell tester, diamond indenter and verification blocks
  • Measurement locations and number of readings
  • Reported HRA results and uncertainty controls
  • Acceptance criteria, report and traceability
