Scope

What This Standard Covers

ASTM F289-96(2025) covers commercially pure molybdenum wire and rod intended for defined electronic uses. It separates wire and rod by both supply form and diameter.

The specification addresses composition, tensile properties, elongation, ductility, surface finish, dimensional tolerances and straightness. The complete limits remain in the official ASTM publication.

Procurement use

Materials and Product Forms

The standard defines three grades according to product form and intended electronic use.

  • Grade 1 — commercially pure molybdenum wire for leads, hooks, supports, heaters and metal-to-glass seals;
  • Grade 2 — commercially pure molybdenum wire intended for mandrel use, supplied black or cleaned;
  • Grade 3 — commercially pure molybdenum rod for leads, hooks, supports and metal-to-glass seals;
  • wire includes spooled or coiled product up to 0.050 in. (1.3 mm) and short cut lengths up to 0.020 in. (0.51 mm); rod is straight-length material over 0.020 in. (0.51 mm), up to the standard’s limit.

Inquiry preparation

Ordering and Verification Points

A quotation should be based on the customer’s governing specification and the requirements stated in the inquiry, drawing, purchase order or project documentation. Include:

  • the full ASTM designation and required edition;
  • the material grade, alloy or manufacturing route stated by the project;
  • the required product form, dimensions, tolerances, condition and surface requirements;
  • quantity, inspection and test requirements, acceptance criteria and requested inspection documents;
  • any supplementary requirements, drawing references, packing instructions and delivery destination.

Cross-reference

Relationship to Other Standards

ASTM B387/B387M covers molybdenum bar, rod and wire under a different material and product framework. The diameter, form and intended use determine which specification may be relevant; the project document must identify the governing standard.

Related designations are not automatically equivalent. Any comparison with EN, ISO, DIN, ГОСТ, ТУ, manufacturer grades or customer specifications must be checked against the applicable technical documents and certificates.
