Material Grade Cross-Reference — How MNK Classifies Equivalents and Related Designations
A similar name, composition range or application group does not automatically make two industrial materials interchangeable. MNK-G.S.A records what type of relationship has actually been demonstrated.
Why “Equivalent” Needs a Defined Meaning
A cross-reference may compare chemistry, mechanical properties, product form, heat treatment, manufacturing route, test requirements or intended application. Two entries can look similar in one of these dimensions and still differ in another that controls the customer’s order.
MNK therefore avoids a single undifferentiated “equivalent grade” label. Every proposed relationship is assigned a type and checked against the governing specification, manufacturer documentation and required supply condition.
The Five MNK Cross-Reference Types

Direct Standard Designation
Use this classification only when the designation and its governing publication are identified. Record the standard number, edition, grade or class, product form and required delivery condition. A designation taken from one standard must not be extended to another product form simply because the base material name is similar.
The customer’s governing specification remains controlling even when another designation appears technically close.
Closest Material Equivalent
A closest equivalent is a comparison result, not a replacement approval. The review should cover the features relevant to the inquiry: composition limits, mechanical or physical requirements, product form, manufacturing route, condition, dimensions, tolerances, tests and inspection documents.
- State the purpose of the comparison.
- Identify every material property or requirement that controls acceptance.
- Record any differences instead of hiding them behind one equality sign.
- Obtain customer or engineering approval before substitution where required.
Application-Group Correspondence
Application groups organise tools or materials by intended operation and working conditions. For example, an ISO 513 machining application group can help discuss how a cutting material is used, but it is not a chemical grade and must not be presented as a direct equivalent to a ВК or Т hardmetal designation.
Use application-group correspondence to narrow the technical conversation, then verify the actual grade, binder, microstructure, properties, geometry and operating conditions.
Common Commercial Variant
Commercial names may be useful search or sourcing references, particularly when suppliers in different markets use different shorthand. They must be expanded into an explicit composition, grade, standard or manufacturer datasheet before quotation. The same shorthand can carry different meanings between sources.
No Direct Equivalent Identified
This is a valid technical conclusion when evidence is incomplete or the material systems are structured differently. It prevents an unsupported cross-reference from entering the quotation. MNK may still source the original designation, request more documentation or propose candidates for a controlled customer review.

- The original designation exactly as written
- Standard, edition, ТУ or project specification
- Required product form, dimensions and condition
- Composition or property requirements available to the buyer
- Application and operating conditions where relevant
- Previous certificate, datasheet, drawing or approved reference
- Whether substitution is prohibited or may be reviewed
